Wheelock Properties Hong Kong Photo Contest 2024 Awards Winners Revealed
The "Hong Kong Photo Contest 2024", presented by Wheelock Properties and organized by National Geographic Magazine, held its award ceremony tonight at the historic creative hub, WLAB. The award ceremony invited Dr. Pang Yiu-Kai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, as a guest presenter. Dr. Pang stated, "I am very honored to attend the 'Hong Kong Photo Contest 2024' award ceremony tonight. The dazzling charm of Hong Kong has always attracted people from all over the world to come and explore, which is why the organizing committee has specially introduced the 'Travelers Awards’ to encourage tourists visiting Hong Kong to participate in the competition. I hope everyone will continue to support and take part in the 'Hong Kong Photography Competition,' an annual event that celebrates photography in our city. Enjoy photography and capture the unique Hong Kong as seen through your eyes."
Special thanks to Japanese winners Kawabata Tomoji and Yamashita Tomohiro, award-winning filmmaker Craig Leeson, and travel photographer Anthony Lau for coming. We look forward to reuniting with all photography enthusiasts next year to continue capturing Hong Kong's stories through our lenses!
The contest was divided into Landscape, Wildlife, City, People, Sports, and Mobile Photography. The judging panel included internationally renowned photographer Mr. Michael Yamashita, senior sports photographer Mr. Brian Ching from Hong Kong, and Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic Traditional Chinese Edition, Mr. Yungshih Lee. This year’s competition received a total of 8,788 submissions, showcasing the urban landscape and cultural heritage of Hong Kong through six categories.
Mr. Ricky Wong, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Wheelock Properties, stated: "Wheelock Properties is honored to partner with National Geographic for the 8th consecutive year to organize the Hong Kong Photo Contest 2024, working together to promote local photography culture. This year, the competition attracted photography enthusiasts from all over the world, with submissions exceeding 8,700 entries. The newly added Sports photography category and the Special Travelers Awards have also brought fresh elements to the competition. I hope all photography enthusiasts continue to explore the beauty of Hong Kong and actively participate in this annual photography event, capturing and preserving the unique charm of Hong Kong through their images!'
Judge Michael Yamashita particularly praised the creativity displayed in the Mobile Photography category: "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winners! As a photographer who has worked in Hong Kong many times, I had high expectations for the Landscape and Cityscape. The quality of this year’s works is exceptional, especially in the mobile photography category, which showcases surprising creativity and technique. This fully proves that 'the best camera is the one in your hand.' I hope all photography enthusiasts will continue to explore and create, and I look forward to meeting everyone on the streets of Hong Kong in the future! "
Another judge, Mr. Brian Ching, stated: "Judging alongside such esteemed professionals was an incredible experience. This competition was not just a judging experience but also a valuable learning opportunity. Each submission exhibited a masterful command of light, composition, and color, weaving compelling visual narratives. I hope future participants will continue to challenge themselves and explore new possibilities in photography."
Editor-in-Chief Mr. Yungshih Lee also mentioned: 'The newly added sports category has brought a new highlight to the contest, with the champion capturing a young participant falling during a roller skating competition, successfully capturing a dynamic moment that showcases the energy and enthusiasm of Hong Kong citizens. However, we also observed that some of the compositions and scenes were quite similar, and we hope that next year's entries will present a more unique perspective, revealing an undiscovered side of Hong Kong.'
