Hong Kong Photo Contest 2023 official launch

05 Oct 2023

A city of fascinating charm that captivates explorers from all over the world with its East-West cultural fusion, natural mixture of urban areas and countryside, and world-class geological wonders that are just a stone's throw away from the bustling city, Hong Kong has always been a source of inspiration for many photographers. To nurture potential and talented photographers, the Hong Kong Photo Contest 2023 invites entries from photography enthusiasts worldwide.

Organized by National Geographic Magazine (Traditional Chinese Edition) and presented by Wheelock Properties, the annual photography contest has been scheduled for the seventh time in a row. This year's categories are landscape, wildlife, city, people, historic building, and mobile photography, aiming to stimulate creativity and encourage contestants to uncover the beauty of the city, people, and nature, and heartwarming tales from a brand-new perspective. Whether taken with a camera or mobile phone, entries should spotlight the unique glamour of Hong Kong.

Through this annual photography contest, we hope to thrust photographers' skills to a level comparable to international standards. Renowned photographers will host workshops and talks during the Contest to improve contestants' skills while bringing photography lovers together to share their experiences and insight. First, on October 12th, there will be a "Award-winning Works Analysis" seminar, hosted by the ecological photographer Samson So and the landscape photographer Anthony Lau. This will be an online live broadcast event. Second, on October 28th, the renowned architectural photographer Tugo Cheng will lead a "Historic Architecture Photography Workshop." Third, on November 19th, the landscape photographer Carlo Yuen will lead a "Landscape Photography Workshop." Lastly, on November 26th, a “City Flower and Bird Art Tour” will be leaded by Yat Chun, renowned watercolor artist in Hong Kong.

Mr. Ivan Tsoi, the Chief Operating Officer of Boulder Media Inc, which is the licensee for National Geographic Magazine Traditional Chinese Edition, Mr. Ricky Wong, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Wheelock Properties, Mr. William Lo, Director & Group Financial Controller of Wheelock Properties, Professor Douglas So, the Chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board, and a group of distinguished guests attended the kick-off ceremony of the Hong Kong Photo Contest 2023. "With the support of Wheelock Properties, National Geographic Magazine Traditional Chinese Edition is hosting the Hong Kong Photo Contest for the seventh consecutive year. Over the past six years, not only has the quantity and quality of the submitted works continued to rise, but the recognition and prominence of the Contest have also increased, motivating us to keep moving forward," said Mr. Ivan Tsoi, "Building on past successes, this year, we especially encourage everyone to participate in the Historic Architecture category. The historic architecture is not only a part of the urban landscape but also a repository of memories, a testament to the blend of Chinese and Western cultures in Hong Kong, and a reflection of our social values. The power of visual storytelling can also reveal the past and present of Hong Kong," Tsoi added.

“It is an honour to co-operate the Hong Kong Photo Contest with National Geographic Magazine Traditional Chinese Edition for the seventh consecutive year, continuing the annual photography event that provides an international platform for photography enthusiasts to showcase their outstanding works and realize their photography dreams. As an international metropolis where the cultures of the East and West meet, Hong Kong has fascinated both locals and tourists with its unique characteristics and culture. Its many historic and unique architectural landmarks have attracted the attention of photographers. The Contest this year introduces a new category, “Historic Architecture.” It is hoped that, through capturing architectures that have stood the test of time, we can record traces of Hong Kong and savour the sentiments of the old days together,” said Mr Ricky Wong, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Wheelock Properties.

Professor Douglas So, the Chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board mentioned, "I am delighted that the 'Historic Architecture' category has been added to this year's Hong Kong Photo Contest. Through photography, we can discover and document the value and significance behind the diverse historical buildings in Hong Kong, as well as the stories of the surrounding environment. The '2023 Heritage Fiesta cum Roving Exhibition' will be held from now until December, featuring 10 designated monuments and graded historic buildings related to greening and landscaping, not only embrace rich history and unique architectural merits, but also closely tie to the green landscape and nature where they are located or in their surroundings.”
