Hong Kong Photo Contest 2020 - visual storytelling HK: Happy ∙ Healthy official launch

16 Oct 2020

Hong Kong Photo Contest 2020 officially kicks off. Themed “Happy•Healthy,” the Contest invites both enthusiasts and novices aged 16 and above to discover the unseen sides of Hong Kong city by capturing the ‘happy and healthy moments’ to deliver a positive message to the public.

The Hong Kong Photo Contest has been organized by National Geographic Magazine (Traditional Chinese Edition) and presented by Wheelock Properties since 2017. The Contest is for Hong Kong photographers to showcase their awe-inspiring work and reveal the best of “The Oriental Pearl” to the world. We hope to enable cultural exchange through photography and bring Hong Kong photographers’ skills to the next level, on a par with international standards. To do this, we are aspired to create an educational and interactive platform, where photography workshops and talks led by renowned industry experts will be organized to help photography lovers to learn new skills and share ideas.

Ivan Tsoi, Chief Operating Officer of Boulder Media Inc. said, “We are extremely pleased to have great support from Wheelock Properties for the Contest. In the past three years, we have received countless outstanding submissions. For example, William Leung’s Sky Ladder, Wong Kai-Lok’s Drying Salted Fish, Joan Pabona’s Sacrifice, and Si Hong’s Simple Weekend, all of which garnered widespread media coverage.”

According to Tsoi, this year’s contest is markedly different. “2020 has been an unprecedented year of challenges and circumstances. Therefore, we would like to invite this year’s contestants to look for happiness and joy in their immediate surroundings, while also keeping an eye out for the ongoing health issues. Despite Hong Kong being a skyscraper-filled metropolis, its proximity to nature makes it somewhat unique. No matter which district you live in, Hong Kong’s breathtaking mountains and forests are always within a 30-minute drive. We love it when our contestants use Hong Kong’s great outdoors to their advantage, and have decided this year to split the NATURE category into two brand new categories: LANDSCAPE and WILDLIFE. To emphasize this year’s theme on health and happiness, we will also be selecting five additional “Happiness and Health Award” winners from our five contest categories: CITY, PEOPLE, MOBILE, and the aforementioned LANDSCAPE and WILDLIFE.”

Managing Director of Wheelock Properties Ricky Wong said, “The Hong Kong Photo Contest is the ideal platform for photographers to showcase their talents and achieve their dreams. Many past winners, such as Kelvin Yuen, Tugo Cheng, Anthony Lau, and Kira Waison Lee, have since become renowned photographers in Hong Kong,” says Wong. “We would like to keep on hosting the Contest, and help even more photographers in Hong Kong realize their dreams well into the future!”

Hong Kong Photo Contest 2020 is now accepting entries from 16-year-old and above photography enthusiasts. The competition is divided into five categories: “Landscape,” “Wildlife,” “City,” “People,” and “Mobile Photography.” From now until December 31, 2020, contestants can upload their works onto www.hkphotocontest.com. In addition, works by first-, second- and third-place from each category will have a chance to be featured in the National Geographic Magazine (Traditional Chinese Edition,) which is distributed to more than 100,000 readers in five markets including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, and Singapore.
