National Geographic Wheelock Hong Kong Photo Contest 2019 official launch

14 Oct 2019

National Geographic Wheelock Hong Kong Photo Contest 2019 officially kicks off. Themed “Hong Kong Story”, the global competition invites both enthusiasts and novices aged 16 and above to explore and story tell the best of Hong Kong nature, city and people through their lens.

National Geographic and Wheelock Properties is partnering for the third time in organising the international photography competition in Hong Kong; offering an international platform not only for Hong Kong photographers to showcase their awe-inspiring work, but also to reveal the best of The Oriental Pearl to the world. National Geographic and Wheelock Properties hope to enable cultural exchange through photography and bring skills of Hong Kong photographers to the next level, in par with international standards during which will be photography workshops and talks led by renowned experts in the industry – offering a platform that’ll be both educational and interactive.

Ivan Tsoi, the Chief Operating Officer of National Geographic Magazine Chinese Edition said, “We have been co-hosting the ‘Hong Kong Story’ photo contest with Wheelock Properties since 2017, allowing a new generation of photographers to showcase their unique views and perspectives on the events, places and people in Hong Kong. Over the past two years, we have received many excellent photographs, including one submitted by Joan Pabona, a Filipino domestic helper. In her monochrome work titled Sacrifice, we see a scaffold worker organizing green safety nets outside a window. This photograph by Joan Pabona won second place in the ‘People & Happenings in Hong Kong’ category, and has attracted widespread press coverage both locally and internationally. In March of this year, she held her first solo photography exhibition titled Empathy in a Click, and began her career as a full-time photographer. Her success story is an encouraging one, as our goal for this contest is to provide an ideal platform for photographers to showcase and unleash their potential. ”

Tsoi also pointed out that many winning entries from the past two years are monochrome works. “In this day and age where color photography has become the mainstream, there are still photographers who engage in the creation of monochrome works. Perhaps it can be said that monochrome works still have their own unique allure and charm. As the art of photography is about light and shadow, some photographers believe that by removing colour further accentuates the organic amalgamation of light and shadow, allowing the viewers to directly see the very nature of a photograph. This year, in order to provide opportunities for our monochrome photographers, we have added the ‘Monochrome’ category for the very first time. Just like the previous years, we will be holding photography talks and workshops during the submission period of the contest. We sincerely welcome everyone to participate, and look forward to receiving even more exciting entries this year.”

National Geographic Wheelock Hong Kong Photo Contest 2019 is now accepting entries from 16 year-old and above photography enthusiasts. The competition is divided into five categories: “Nature”, “City”, “People”, “Mobile Photography” and “Monochrome Photography”.
