National Geographic Wheelock Youth Photo Competition 2017 official announcement of the winners list

The winners list of National Geographic Wheelock Youth Photo Competition 2017 was officially announced at the award ceremony held at Wheelock Gallery in Admiralty on 31 January. Chairman of Hong Kong Tourism Board Dr Peter Lam Kin-ngok, Chairman of Wheelock and Company Mr. Douglas Woo, Chairman of Wheelock Properties Mr. Stewart Leung, CEO of Boulder Publishing and Editor in Chief of National Geographic Magazine Chinese Editions Mr. Yungshih Lee presented awards to the winners.

The power of pictures transcends language and words. Born from a partnership between National Geographic and Wheelock Properties and supported by The Hong Kong Tourism Board, the youth photography competition offers a platform not only for a new generation of photographers to showcase their awe-inspiring work, but also to reveal the best of The Oriental Pearl to the world.

Themed “Hong Kong Reminiscence: Places, People & Happenings”, the competition was divided into four categories: “Places in Hong Kong”, “People & Happenings in Hong Kong”, “Future of Hong Kong”, and “Mobile Photography”. The competition attracted 3,518 entries from 13 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Mainland China, Europe and the United States. Competition was keen for there were professionals participating as well as amateur photographers.

Chairman of Wheelock Properties Stewart Leung said, “We hope to discover new talent and foster their dreams of becoming a professional photographer through this competition. The photography workshops and talks led by renowned experts in the industry are also an interactive platform for budding young photographers. We hope this competition will be run every year and become an annual event which nurtures outstanding photographers.”

The judges for the competition are Mr. Michael Yamashita, photographer for National Geographic, Mr. Samson So, famous nature photographer in Hong Kong, and Mr. Yungshih Lee, Editor in Chief of National Geographic Magazine Chinese Edition. Mr. Michael Yamashita said, “I enjoyed being a judge for this year Natgeo Wheelock youth photo competition. Always interesting to see how youth see the world. And knowing HK as well as I do it’s inspiring to see new angles on subjects I myself have photographed before. Congratulations to the winners for well executed, innovative vision.” Mr. Samson So, who is the most familiar with Hong Kong among the three judges, remarked, “The works provide us with a view of Hong Kong at both the macro and micro levels, so we can discover more about Hong Kong’s natural scenery and lights of the city, and feel the pulse and energy of the local society. When we were choosing the winning works, we considered the photographic aesthetics, sense of timing and the story behind the photo.” Editor in Chief from Taiwan Mr. Yungshih Lee said, “The entries show us the passion for photography that young people have and there are many superb photos. Some similar themes and locations were chosen in a lot of photos, so I hope the future entries will continue to be creative and bring us refreshing viewpoints from the young photographers’ perspective.”      

The first-, second-, and third-place winners from each category received a prize of HKD15,000, HKD6,500 and HKD3,500 respectively. Their winning works will also be featured in the February issue of the Chinese edition of National Geographic magazine, which is distributed to hundreds of thousands of readers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia. Wheelock Gallery in Queensway Plaza, Admiralty, Hong Kong is exhibiting the works from today to 26th February, then the exhibition will continue in Gallery by the Harbour in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong from 28th February to 11th March. The exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public.
